Jim "Big Tuna" Kaye

Radio started out as a hobby with me in the mid 60s, as a teenager, in Junior High!  Thanks to my Dad letting me move the Lawnmower and Yard equipment back to the garage... I transformed the shed in my back yard into a "pirate" AM station in 1966-67.  Built a small 100mw transmitter kit from Radio Shack (and a 2nd transmitter later from Lafayette Radio!)  The signal got out about a half-mile since we put up 300 feet of antenna wire in a loop in the trees in the yard!  We even had an "on air" staff of several of my friends from school and the neighborhood - broadcasting every afternoon after school, and evenings, and pulled a few ALL-NIGHTERS in the summertime!  One of our DJ's even learned how to do Sports "Play-by-Play" by watching the RED SOX on a portable B&W TV, with the sound turned down!  TODAY, he is the voice of FENWAY PARK (Carl Beane).  My good friend Chip Cogswell was in a Local Band in High School, and HE was a DJ, too... Chip and I made our own JINGLES "singing" into the microphone - using his Mic and Guitar Amp and Reverb! (Chip also helped me put up all that antenna wire!)

Attended Conn. School of Broadcasting in 1971, DJ in College Radio at Mt. Holyoke College, 1971-72,  Then at Springfield Tech. Community College, 1972-73.  First Pro job at WAQY-FM (WACKY 102), 1973-1981 (Worked with GLEN "FM" STEVENS and KEN "SQUIRT BABY" GILBERT at WACKY beginning in the late 70s!) Full-Time, then, Part-Time at WTIC-FM, Hartford, 1981-83 (started TV work in 1982 through today)   THEN, Sunday Morning GOLDRUSH back at WAQY, 1984-88,  Moved GOLDRUSH to WHMP-FM (Northampton, MA) 1988-1995.  THE GOLDRUSH Returned in June, 2008 - on the INERNET!
